REPLIKATOR information for communication
Sash Romensky and Ryan Knowlesâ collaboration started in their pre teens. Admitedly it was less about music and more about Ryan getting Sash in trouble. Gesticulating with one finger and mouthing off at much older angry skinheads was one such past time. Like the angry Skinheads, Music found both of them. One of Sashâs first compositions was an emotional outpouring of unrequited love toward Ryanâs younger sister. She was far more interested in a certain Olympic swimmer and this rejection in turn perhaps led Sash down the path of angst ridden Rock n Roll, straddling the scene caught between the pretention of the Northern side of the Yarra and the formulaic South side derivative rock sound. Sash fronted a couple of bands that just didnât fit in. And thatâs how he liked it. The ever shifting and genre bending â Vantageâ and later incarnation âColourfast â , both produced by Woody Annison, received National airplay, some decent reviews but confused the shit out of record companies. Ryansâ journey was quite divergent, He immersed himself in the depths of the marginalised electronic dance scene from the raw pioneering days,Ryan aka DJ Midian was a founding member of Industrial.Audio.Meltdown a live techno outfit that held a strong presence on the Melbourne rave and club scene playing all the major parties and supporting the likes of Dave Clack,Missah & Tim,Humate & Dave the Drummer to mention a few.
Together they now encapsulate what is commonly or crudely known as crossover, embracing Rock emotionality with electronic production values. Ryan provides the rich textures, beats, synths and bent soundscapes to which Sash provides thoughtful lyrics and stamps his unique vocal style and guitar work. Thoroughly collaborative the music is composed through feeling rather than any pre- determined structure or analysis. The end result is a beautiful melding of completely different musical worlds and it is their starkly different experience, influences and musical disciplines that have created it. Replikator sounds and feels like everything and Nothing else.
